Great Food! Great People. I really loved the food, the people, and the atmosphere at Charlie's. Best hush puppies I've ever had. Hands down the best she crab soup anywhere in hampton roads and for that matter anywhere else as well. Sent the crab legs out at the perfect temperature also. Couldn't have asked for a better dining experience! 5 stars!!! They really made my Valentine's Day a great experience…
The WORST place ever.
This is the worst eating place we have ever been!!! Went there for Mother's Day 2009! We were discrimminated against - the service was non-existent. The food from what we saw were very small
portions - we were never served our food - We had to leave - what a way to end a beautiful Mother's Day!
Just keep driving - don't stop - Dirty-high priced I hate to give a rating of 1 star - is there anyway to put a negative star!!!!!…
GOOD SEAFOOD AFTER ALL THE YEARS. FOR ALL THE WHINERS........GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. I LIVED ONE BLOCK FROM CHARLIE'S IN 1961 AND THEY AND THE DUCK INN WERE THE ONLY 2 PLACES TO EAT UNTIL YOU GOT TO OCEANVIEW AND IT WAS AND HAS BEEN ALWAYS GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE. THE STREET I LIVED ON WAS ONLY 5 HOUSES DEEP AND A DEAD END. NOT ANOTHER THING IN SIGHT. (WISH TIMES WERE STILL THAT SIMPLE) AND WISH PEOPLE DIDN'T EXPECT SO MUCH. I WONDER WHY CHARLIE'S SEAFOOD HAS EXISTED THRU ALL THE BUILDING OVER THE YEARS IF THE FOOD IS SO SORRY???? Disgusting! We also fell for the "Best on the Beach" (7 times no less!) ad in the phonebook. Apparently, this isn't any sort of official award because no one could make this claim after eating there.
We were happy when we saw that NO ONE else was inside when we walked in as our youngest was cranky that night. Over the next hour, only one other couple came in. I now know why.
The "Famous She Crab Soup" was plain cream and imitation crab. The hushpuppies were bland and soaking in grease. The shrimp was dry and tasted fresh out of the microwave. Tofu is more flavorful than the flounder. The sides were equally underwhelming: black-eyed peas without so much as a scrap of pork and squash that I believe was prepared in a blender. The salad dressing was even watered down!
To add insult to injury, the place was expensive! It cost more for two of us (2 adults + 2 children) to eat than it had the night before for three (3 adults + 2 children)- with dessert and appetizer!
We bolted for the door before they had a chance to ask if we wanted dessert, angry that we'd been swindled so badly.
Hopefully you've read this review BEFORE you head out. We only checked the Yahoo reviews AFTER we got home. Our mistake.
Not all restaurants are over the top and I don't expect 5 stars everytime but even McDonald's is far and away a better choice than this place. It claims to have been in business for over 60 years. Other than suckering tourists like us, I'm not sure how that's possible.
The service was equally bad. We had to ask for menus. We had to ask for a high chair. We had to ask for silverware. We SHOULD'VE asked for our money back!
If you've got no other option just go hungry and save your money. Charlies, Chuck's, or Upchuck's as it should be called, is a sure LOSER and the owner should be ashamed of himself!

DO NOT GO HERE!!!
First of all, I have no idea how this restaurant even passed the health inspection. It's filthy on the outside and even worse on the inside. We sat at 2 different tables and they were just filthy and sticky. The tables had not been cleaned in probably days, the floors needed to be vacuumed, the restroom was beyond disgusting! I've seen so many cleaner ones at rest stops and gas stations!
Second, The food was over priced and fishy. The side dishes were NOT fresh, I'm sure they had been re-heated over and over. They boast they have won awards for their $4 "She Crab soup". It's nothing but Clam Chowder made with crab... 1oz of soup for $4? NOT WORTH IT!!!
Third, I was completely baffled by the servers inability to answer our questions on what a particular dish was, or what something tasted like. Her excuse "I've only worked here for 2 weeks" or "It's not in season so no one's asked me that". My grandfather asked what Roe was... The server didn't even know they were fish eggs. Come on, you work their, you should at least know that.
Fourth of all, they think WAY too highly of their stuff. We had a party of 6 and had a $103 bill. They're ridiculously expensive. We would have been MUCH better off going to Caption D's or Long John Silver's... Plus, what really got to my mother, they seriously charge 25 cents a hush puppy! ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? You go to a Mexican restaurant and they give you free chips, or an Italian restaurant and they give you bread sticks... But they charge a quarter a hush puppy that they AUTOMATLICY put on your table and don't even ask you if you want them???
I have, honest to God, never been so disappointed in a restaurant visit before. Please do yourself a visit and avoid this place like the plague! There are so many better restaurants in the area. Please don't waist your time or money with them.…
