DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. Nothing on the buffet was good! Our first time at the VA Beach Captain Georges very low quaility food, crab legs are very small, soft and appeared to be old, steamed shrimp, scallops, oyster and fried shrimp all over cooked and dry. I believe the scallops are fake, side dishes bad. One positive is the fresh baked bread. I really miss the Fishermans Wharf seafood buffet in hampton :(
After 10 years....
I came back to the place everyone used to rave about as one of the best Seafood places to go in the Mi-Atlantic, and to my surprise, the ownership/management have sacrificied quality.
The Salad table is about half of what it used to be. There used to be an entire table with every salad you could imagine, and now it's down to a selection of a few salads, which none looked inviting in a Seafood buffet restaurant.
The broiled seafood table looked pretty scary. The food was off-colored, and you couldn't tell if it was seafood or the the "mixings or sauces" served with. The Fried food table was good enough to earn one of the stars, albeit not at the standard that it was 10 years ago (or at other places in the area today).
There was an abundance of Crab Legs, where they earn the other star in the rating. If you're coming for just for the Crab Legs and nothing else, you're coming to right place. Always abundant and hot.
Service was OK. The girl that was seating us tried to put us in a room where it felt like a school cafeteria. When we asked her to sit us somewhere else, she didn't care for the request to walk an additional 10 yards.
The waiter was very friendly, and always paid attention to ensure we had something to drink.
Morale to the comparison between now and 10 years ago is that they are not what they used to be, and you may be able to satisfy your entire family somewhere else.
Better Seafood at Long John Silvers. It has been a few years since we visited Captain Georges. This restaurant is nothing like it once was. The fried seafood seemed to come from a bag (not hand breaded) and the oysters were terrible. I do honestly prefer the fried seafood at Long John Silvers over the offering this evening at Capt.Geo. Buffet. The only item that we found above par were the steamed shrimp. I was truely sorry to see that this once excellent restaurant has drifted the way of many(cutting quality for proffit which is not necessarily there fault) .If the previous quality of buffet was offered we would have been more than happy to pay more. I must say that the service was attentive and freindly. Save your money and go elsewere when splurging for a good seafood dinner.
Great Place to Eat!!. I don't know what "markholt" is talking about. This place is great and has been for some time. Every time my family comes down, we eat at Captain Georges. The server calling you 'honey" or "baby" just adds to the atmosphere of the restaurant and the area you're in. We have never had a complaint about this place. I love it and will continue to go back. The previously mentioned reviewer needs to remove that stick from their behind and lighten up. Not all servers are coke heads....maybe some, but not all. On top of that, they'er usually very attentive and alert, ready for just about anything.
Okay, so last night my lovely wife wanted to do something nice for my birthday and take me to a suposedly wonderful Seafood Buffet. I am warning everyone in tidewater, DO NOT GO TO CAPTAIN GEORGE's. First off the food was terrible. The salmon was completely gross and over seasoned, topped with cheese? who wants tons of cheese on a perfectly good fish? Horrible! The crab legs were cold, not "on ice alaskan king crab style cold" we're talking taken out of the steamer and left to sit for a day cold. Not to mention there must have been over 1,000 people there. the foot traffic was horrible, it was complete chaos and a VERY stressful environment to have to pay $70.
Another problem, our server gave us our drinks, and was never heard from again until I actually said something 30 minutes later. This is the problem we Tidewater people are going to keep running into time and time again, coke heads being hired as wait staff. I'm sorry but I hate judging people, but if you were one, you know what they are, how they look and how they act. I felt really bad for my wife, here she was trying to do something nice for my birthday, and this "seafood buffet" pretty much threw our money, time, and stomachs away. For the records, if you are waiting in a nice establishment, it is VERY insulting to be called "baby, sweetie, hunnay or darling," which our "alternate" waitress continued to do. I did complain to the manager who I swear thought I was going to assault him, which was not the case at all. I was complaining about what I have mentioned above, so they gave us a $20 gift card, what the hell am I going to do with that? I'm never setting foot into that place EVER again. I posted more on this elswhere and have reported the conditions of the bathroom to the city. The waste baskets were overflowing and toilet paper with feces was on the toilet seats and floor.
Best Seafood I have ever had. I went to Virginia Beach the middle of Sept , while there I ate at Captain Georges Buffet ... My experience there was superb, I had the most pleasurable time and the food was fantastic.... You definately get what you pay for ... Our Waiter RICK WIDMERE was the best waiter one could possibly want , I never lacked for anything he made sure my visit was a great one ... Even as busy as the place was he made us feel at home and like we were his only customers.... We enjoyed our visit so much we went back a second time. I plan on returning next year and Captain Georges is first on my list .....Hats off to you RICK

Just not all that.....
We were lucky cause 5 of our party were in line right as we walking in waiting to be seated so our wait was not long @ all. I have been to a few buffets in my time but this one was such let down. How much can one eat of crab legs and such in the small amount of time you have.? There were a huge selection of seafood mahi mahi, salmon, mushrooms, string beans, steamed blue shelled crabs, half shell oysters, etc just to name a few. I skipped the salad bar didn't come to eat salad..LOL I'm not a big eater and the buffet was way to expensive to me, but you did have the option to buy single orders and take out as well.
The place was LOUD. The server we had @ our table was attentive. But she still kept buzzing around rushing us...but not. The wait @ the buffet line was crazy to say the least, the line was practically back @ the entrance. There were a lot of children too which @ the buffet line is not a good thing because they are not tall enough to reach the sneeze glass...eeewwww
Overall I would only suggest Capt' G to tourist any one really wanting some real seafood needs to go some where else.
I love Captain George's.
First of all, the buffet is somewhat expensive (26 dollars for adults, half price for kids ages 12-and under, and toddlers are free), but, seafood is always going to be more expenisve no matter where you go. You are paying for variety and quality. You can't go to Ryan's or Golden Corral and load up on high quality seafood. (Usually you could just find one buffet dish of uncleaned, very small popcorn shrimp) or maybe fried catfish. There are actually MORE buffet lines at Capt Georges compared to the standard buffet places. At Capt George's there are 2 dessert bars, full of homemade desserts such as boston creme pie, banana pudding, flan, carrot cake, brownies, cookies, baklava, fresh fruit, chocolate pudding, velvet cake, and loads of other baked goodies. And there is a full salad bar that's got your traditional salad bar items plus tuna salad and usually two different kinds of seafood pasta salad and cocktail shrimp. And then there is also a HUGE main bar that has stuff like fried oysters, fried clams, crab imperial, norfolk special, oysters rock, seafood stuffed mushrooms, steamed clams, steamed shrimp, fried shrimp, fried chicken that's marinated in hot sauce, barbecued spare ribs, asparagus, sauteed mussels, new england clam chowder, she crab soup, steamed vegetables, roasted chef potatoes, cornbread, dinner rolls, hushpuppies, etc. There is also another separate seafood bar that has snow crab legs, steamed shrimp, and usually mussels and clams. And I haven't even named all there is to eat to there.
A word of advice: try to go on Sunday before 4:00, that's when the buffet is at reduced price (20 dollars for adults), for those concerned with price.
