Tips for Alexander's On The Bay

October 11, 2012

We had the best meal in Virginia Beach. The salmon was excellent. Surprised to read all reviews about bad service as our service was very good. Great view of the bay.

The food was very good, service great (I like my water kept full...and they did that), and we had a great view of the Bay.

My family and I decided to treat ourselves to a special meal at Alexander's. We have not been there since it was rebuilt after the storm. We had always loved it in the past. We were pleased to find that they had the same great food and wonderful service as always. We had a very nice time!

I have eaten at Alexander's on a few occasions. Starting with the young men who greet you as you enter the parking lot and park your car, the atmosphere is most friendly. The view of the ocean and Bay-Bridge tunnel at night is spectacular. The Calamari appetizer is one of the best in the area. The main courses all are fresh, tasty and more than ample in amount. I don't eat desserts so can't tell you about that. They have a good selection of wines, some of which are a little pricey, but are excellent in taste. They have a small bar that gets a good "play" of regulars. In nice weather, eating outdoors adds a special touch to any evening.

This is the worst restaurant I have ever had the mistake of patronizing!! I would highly discourage anyone from booking a special event or party here. It is not worth the time, hassle, rudeness, or the exorbitant price tag for a headache.

The Atmosphere:

Don't get me wrong, the view is absolutely stunning. (Ironically, it also seems to be the only thing that allows this restaurant to sink a bit slower.) However, the restaurant's decor is something left to be desired. The beautiful view from inside the restaurant is obscured by tacky hot-glued starfish on a string. Sterile pictures crookedly hang on mint-pastel walls. Faded out table cloths cover the old tables that claustrophobically fill the dining rooms. Strings of Christmas lights are strewn throughout the dusty fake plants that are haphazardly placed throughout the restaurant.

The Food:

For the price that you pay per plate, this place is (nicely put) subpar. The calamari was bland, extremely oily, and similar to chewing on a small rubber tire. The shrimp was also terrible; extremely overcooked and flavorless. Any potential left for the oysters Rockefeller was quickly diminished as my taste buds dug through the gritty sandbox of an oyster. The "handmade" meatballs bore a close resemblance to the flavor of the cheap meatballs that one would buy frozen at a big-box-store.

The Service:

Where do I begin? The owner/manager is beyond rude and very un-accommodating! The management has no sense of customer service or helping customers. In fact, the owner seems to have zero issue about talking down and belittling her customers. Nicely requesting for a few extra chairs for family was quite grievance to her. Although we even volunteered to move the chairs ourselves, it turned into a fight. Since family members had no where to sit, a few of us decided to make room by bringing our food to the bar and drink a few beers. Apparently, buying several beers does not give you the privilege to sit down and eat your meal.

TL;DR STAY AWAY!!!!

We got a GroupOn to this restaurant and after reading the reviews, I was seriously nervous to even use it. We arrived and I already was expecting it to be a bad experience. We were pleasantly surprised! The food was very good, service great (I like my water kept full...and they did that), and we had a great view of the Bay. The rolls were dry--only complaint. Oh, and it's super expensive. For 2 of us the bill was $103 prior to GroupOn and I only had one drink and my husband had two beers.

Gone downhill. Went there a few nights ago with my wife and was surprised how the overall quality of the place has deteriorated. Our service was very poor (2 waitresses for approximately 15 tables of customers) and my entree which I had ordered there several times in the past and loved it was not at all quality wise what it was on the previous occasions that I had ordered it. I am not a complainer and actually waited a day to write this review so I could be more objective. We will never return to this restaurant again and instead go to a fast food seafood restaurant for 1/10 the cost and enjoy it equally well or more.
