Should be a great hangout next summer !.
Blue Petes re-opened recently after being closed for over a year. I never went there when they were in business before.
I decided to try it out last night and was impressed. The staff is really trying hard and the prices were decent for this area.
It was dark when I got there but I could tell by all the outside decking that this places will be great next summer for outside dining/drinking.
It's a little tough to find and is located on a twisty backroad off Sandbride Road....so be careful at night !
It's worth the visit and should really come into it's own once the warm weather returns !

HADN'T BEEN THERE IN YEARS (HEARD IT HAD GONE DOWN HILL). NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. MY PARTNER HAD LAMB THAT SHE RAVED ABOUT...AND I TRIED THE ROCKFISH WITH A SPECIAL SAUCE, THAT WAS FANTASTIC. THE DRINKS WERE GOOD SIZED, AND THE NEW AMBIENCE WAS FANTASTIC. THE NEW/OLD LOUNGE AREA, WITH RUSTIC STYLING, FIREPLACE AND COMFY CHAIRS WAS PERFECT FOR AN APERTIF OR FOR AFTER DINNER LIBATIONS.
WILL RETURN AGAIN THIS SUMMER... PAUL AND WIFE ARE LOVELY HOSTS THAT FIT US IN AS WE REQUESTED.

Awesome Service, Food and atmosphere!. We've traveled around the world and eaten in some truly wonderful restaurants and without a doubt , Blue Pete?s ranks right up there with the best of them! We were met at the door and seated by Paul, the owner, which set the tone for the rest of our evening. Our waiter was friendly, helpful and seemed to genuinely care about our dining experience. We consulted with the wine steward, who was personable and knowledgeable and didn't try to push us into ordering the most expensive bottle on the menu. On our visit, we arrived quite late and were the last to leave but not once did we feel rushed out the door! To begin our wonderful gastronomic experience, we ordered two appetizers: "Angels on Horseback" , lightly fried bacon wrapped oysters and crawfish tails served with an exceptional remoulade sauce and ?Steamers? which had mussels, clams and oysters in a spicy, garlicky broth with tomatoes. Both were "Oh my God..." good! We also ordered two Caesar salads but after our waiter's recommendation, we chose to share one, which was excellent advice! The salad was huge and came with 3 hearts of romaine, homemade croutons and some of the best dressing we've ever had. For our entree, we split the crab cakes. What a great choice! The kitchen split the order for us with no problem or extra charge. When crab cakes are on the menu, we find it extremely hard to pass them up and in this case we were truly rewarded. All jumbo lump crab meat, these two lightly fried cakes had no filler or back fin meat and were served with a great remoulade sauce. The meals came with sauteed vegetables and wonderful garlic mashed potatoes. For dessert, we shared a slice of Key Lime Pie and to negotiate for the last bite, it was so decadent! Next time (and there will DEFINITELY be a next time) we'll share our meals but we'll each get our own piece of Key Lime pie! Our first of many trips to Blue Pete?s was a wonderful experience and we genuinely look forward to our next visit!
Ask for Paul....... I was very sceptical when the taxi driver recommended it. He said "best crab cakes around" and a really cool destination..... well..... it was! The main reason I'm wiritng this is because of the owner who stopped by my table welcomed me to Blue Petes. A really nice guy. I thanked Paul on the way out and told him I would recommend others give it a try. The food was really fresh, well prepared and we had a great time...... can't see how you could go wrong.
A hidden tresure. The restaurant is not in a typical location but that only adds to the charm. The food was wonderful. Starting with the blueberry dressing on the house salad. I wish I could have bought a bottle of it because I could share with with my friends and family at home. I had the Angel Hair Encrusted Salmon all I can say is WOW! I never knew you could do that with pasta, and the sauce was creamy and full of flavor. When I tried my husband's pork chop it tasted like sugar then just melted in your mouth. The basket of bread was fresh and a really nice touch was the muffins, they were a sweat treat. The service was great from the beginning to the end. The new owner came to the table and introduced himself which made us feel taken care of. I later asked when he took over management and I found out that he re-opened in May. Any reviews prior to this date disregard. I am so happy that we found this hidden tresure. I plan on visiting everytime I am in the area.
Don't judge this book by it's rustic, rural cover.
My son, 10 year old daughter and myself took my wife on a Sunday evening at 5pm for her birthday. Finding the restaurant would have been slightly difficult without my GPS. It is located out in the middle of nonwhere, and is the only business located out in a remote area with few houses and mostly swamp land and farmland. If first impressions held any weight, you would think of this place as a fried fish, french fries and hushpuppy type of place. Actually that is more of the kind of place we were looking for. Instead, we were greated with linen tablecloths and napkins, and crystal goblets and candles on the table.
PROS: We were seated quickly and the service was very nice. The wait staff was very attentive. My wife, daughter and I all had the surf (crab cakes)and turf special. My son had the blackened salmon. The steak was very good. It looked and tasted like filet mignon. I liked the vegetable medly, especially the yellow squash. Upon our departing, the wait staff and management was very friendly and thanked us for coming in. It was almost like leaving the home of a family member.
CONS: My daughter was handed a regular menu, and when asked I was told that a 1/2 portion could be ordered for her. She wanted the surf and turf, but we were told that surf and turf could not be ordered in 1/2 portions, and the reason given was that it would throw off "portion control". They offered a pasta or chicken finger substitute, but my daughter was set on steak, so we were left having to pay full price for a meal she couldn't finish. We didn't order any appetizers, nor mixed drinks, nor dessert and the bill with a tip still came out to a whopping $160.00. I was glad it was a special event, because I wouldn't want to pay that kind of price for an ordinary night out for dinner.
Incredible Country Gourmet at the Beach.
Each year, we take our family to Virginia Beach for vacation. Over the past 10 years, our children have grown to become adults, with married partners . . . and we have tried almost every "tourist" restaurant, favorite local spot and upcoming new eatery.
This year, we found out about Blue Pete's. We were first captured by the history. As a local Beach place, it caught our attention. The other interest was the emphasis on fresh seafood and the use of local ingredients.
We fell in love with the quaint location some 20 minutes from the oceanfront, in the community on Pungo - a farming area of Virginia Beach. Located on the back waters, the scene was delightful.
Chef Eric's use of fresh and local ingredients was delicious. From the fresh blueberries from the Veber farm used in the muffins to the cobbler for dessert, it was great. The bread also featured a creamy butter and an herb infused butter made on site.
Our appetizers featured salads and the She Crab soup. The soup was the best that I have ever had. The broth was silky smooth with a bit of creamy heat. The crab was plentiful and tender. The Ceasar salad was a visual delight. The presentation was so inviting and the taste was a wonderful.
Our entrees included a variety of fresh seafood including Tuna, Rockfish, Shrimp and Scallops. The preparations were skillfully created and delicious. My personal favorite was the "Bercy" sauce on the Rockfish. And the Guyere Gratin and Sweet Potato Brulee are a must have.
After dinner, we were so full and satisfied . . . but we had to try the dessert. All made on site, they were incredible. The Key Lime Pie was some of the best ever, the Flourless Chocolate Torte was decadent, the Blueberry Cobbler better than grandma's and the Sampler (Creme Brulee, Raspberry Sorbet, and Bread Pudding) as the best.
Paul and Holly Veber have done an incredible job. We will be back to Blue Pete's. It is on our list of must go to places from this point on.
Secluded area, exceptional dining experience!!!. I took my husband to Blue Pete's last night for a special "First Father's Day Dinner". I wanted to try something different and something that he had never had before. He is a manager at a restaurant and is pretty critical about service and food. He loves to cook, so I wanted to take him somewhere where he could try something different! I surprised him with this restaurant. When we first pulled up, he had no idea where he was. Blue Pete's is located out in the middle of nowhere, which I love! I made reservations the night before and when we walked in, they knew just who we were and seemed very happy to see us! That made me feel really good. We got a nice table right by the window overlooking the water. The table scape was set up very nicely and cleanly. The hostess introduced the server by name and we were given an opportunity to look over the menu. Once our server, Richard, came over, he was very personable, offering his favorite dishes to us. He was very attentive and made sure we had everything we wanted and needed. The food was wonderful! My husband ate everything off of his plate and even some of mine! We received a very good amount of food for the price and the wine was delicious! We also ordered dessert and we were very pleased with that as well! As we were about to leave, the manager, Paul, came over to our table to see how our dinner was. This was very professional and we appreciated this very much. My husband had a wonderful dinner and we plan to go back very soon! This restaurant may have received bad reviews in the past, but it is now under new management and is definitely worth another visit!!!
New Dining Destination. My name is Paul Veber, and am the new owner of Blue Pete's ( the new number is 453-6478), and would like to invite anyone who has tried Blue Petes before to try it again. We have renovated the building, staff and menu, so that this destination can once again be considered a great place to visit and eat. My wife and I look forward to your next visit.
Wasting Away at a Cost.
When I grew up in Virginia Beach, there was no better treat than heading to the outskirts for dinner at Blue Petes. By far the best local spot, Blue Petes was incredible with the best and freshest seafood with a festive, friendly, environment that made the restaurant the classic Beach hangout.
During a recent visit with my folks, we made the trek to to celebrate my birthday. As we pulled in to Blue Petes right away something felt off ? as if we arrived to a ?Pottersville? version of the restaurant I remember. The dustbowl parking lot and shack was in severe neglect (I know "shabby chic beach shack", and to be clear it was wholly without charm).
Even though I made a reservation, the dining room was ominously vacant at 7pm (this is midweek, but it?s July). We were greeted by a sweet, but inexperienced teenage server who offered so-so recommendations and was baffled over our questions (um, let me go ask the kitchen). The food tasted manufactured and nuked. The fish was undoubtedly fresh but flavorless, and the fruit and vegetable sides clearly came from a can - the cut of the pineapple was pure Del Monte.
The harshest part of the experience was being handed a $150 tab for 2 apps, drinks, entrees and a single shared dessert. It?s flat-out insulting to be served on a table with a plastic tablecloth and dusty plastic flowers. The clueless server lit all the tealights in the empty dining room except for ours. What?s worse is the restaurant was well-staffed, but all were teens (clearly unsupervised) who huddled near the kitchen door giggling and blasting their music (zero focus on the customer).
I always cheer the independent restaurants, but I felt terrible for my Mom picking up the tab. $150 is a lot of money for her and Blue Petes mocked our patronage. With tons of competition (like the excellent Eat: American Bistro, Tautogs and Steinhilbers), Blue Petes deserves to waste away in the dustbowl that it has become. Do not eat at Blue Petes.
