This Is It. So let's be real here, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, all my homies on the Southside (and, if we're honest, the Peninsula, too--y'all ain't got no cheesesteak joints up there). Philly Style is not in a good part of town. No crime in saying it, though there's plenty of crime around it. Are you gonna get mugged going to get your cheesesteak on? I doubt it. Are a bunch of thugs gonna be getting some cheesesteaks with you? You bet--and that's the real South Philly experience, there.

Remember, you're going here for very low-class food. This doesn't mean bad food, just what's eaten by the lower rungs on the socioeconomic ladder. It's the real deal, in the real environment, and it's busy. Know what you're gonna get, order up, and step to the left. If you're looking for suggestions, try this: whole cheesesteak, with onions, hot and sweet peppers. Pick up some kettle chips and a Tastykake.

Closest thing to Philly around here. I'm from Philly and trust me, you won't find anyplace around here closer to the real thing. I've directed dozens of people to this place because it's the real deal. Even the memorabilia on the walls is fun to look at while waiting for your order. The employees are quick and efficient, but don't expect a lot of talk from them. They're too busy making sure everything goes smoothly for their customers. I have to give it 5 stars, but would love to give it 10.

Philly Steak and Subs. Yeah, everybody says subs from their home town are the best..Who knows what the ultimate sub is suppossed to taste like? What I know is that the steak and cheese subs are beyond delicious, and the (1/2 cold) Italian subs are sublime. Phone your order in at lunchtime, they are BUSY!

Philly Style has earned its slogan, "Best in the South Since 1983.". The Verdict:
Philly Style has earned its slogan, "Best in the South Since 1983."

The Scene:
Steaks & Subs makes a great submarine sandwich. They also make a great steak sandwich. The location in a commercial strip just north of I-64 may please delivery crews more than customers, but it's a lot mor convenient than going to Philly. The bread rolls are trucked in fresh, as is the turkey; no turkey roll found here! The steak sandwich with provolone is delicious, and the cold meat subs are huge. Philly Style has booths for eating in, but many choose to take out. Order at the counter, and grab a bottled drink and Tastycake dessert along with your sandwich for a complete Philly Style meal.

If you order one thing:
You can't go wrong with the steak sandwich.
