Whites not Allowed!!!. I am white and my husband is Indian, southern Indian so he is very dark skinned. We went to Harry's one Sunday afternoon because he said he had heard great things about it from some of his friends. I could tell from the moment we walked in the door that I wasn't welcome there and it just kept getting worse. The food was a joke, the service was nonexistent and we could wait to leave before anything else happened. Also, I was 9 months pregnant at the time so all the dirty looks from what I would assume were employees didn't help matters. They succeeded...we got the hell out of there as fast as we could and he wanted to go back and yell at all the idiots there that went out of their way to be rude but I talked him out of it. Just a few words of warning.

This fried chicken might just beat mom's.. I'm from Georgia. It takes alot for me to eat fried chicken at a restaurant but I ordered fried chicken and ribs. The chicken was amazing! a perfect scald ( if you don't know what that means you've never used an iron skillet), hot, right out of the pan, tender and juicy. The ribs were not as tender as I'm used to but the sauce makes up for it. You could eat it with a spoon. The sides were a great match. The mac 'n cheese, collard greens, green beans, corn bread all of it was exactly what southern food is all about. If you still have space you have to get a sweet potato jack.

The place for reasonably-priced home-style cooking and barbecue.. The Scene
For a touch of soul in downtown, this is the place to go. Downtown workers populate Harry's at lunchtime for a quick, hot meal, but the dinner crowd is more diverse and the pace more leisurely.

The Food
The place may be ultra-casual and look like a McDonald's prototype, but its Southern-style dishes like fried chicken can't be beat. The numerous daily specials posted on the dry-erase board can cause even regular customers to linger at the counter before placing their order, spoiled for choice. You can even get a whole sweet potato pie to take home with you. Breakfast options include all the usual suspects like bacon and eggs, pancakes and omelettes.

BBQ the way it was meant to be.. Just plain ole good food in your basic no frills BBQ joint. Fall off the bone tender ribs with a wet sauce. Sandwiches are generous. A nice selection of sides. I love the beans. Plenty of daily specials. Been there in the evenings and on Sunday afternoons. Service is always friendly. Food is always great. Never had room for dessert.

An Age Old Norfolk Dining Experience. What a wonderful experience! I brought 4 hungry teenagers to get a taste of real BBQ and they left looking for more. The informal atmosphere, jukebox, and downhome service staff complement some of the best BBQ I have ever had. I recommend that anyone visiting the "Waterside" area make this a stop for lunch.

The best ribs. Harry's has a very exstensive soul food menu. His pork ribs are the best I have ever had anywhere( which includes southern california, eastern tennesse, charleston, SC,jacksonville, Fl, st. thomas, chicago). He uses a secret dry rub, slow cooks them and uses a delicious finishing sauce. I have tried some of his other menu items and was impressed with everything I tried. He (Harry) took the time to find out what his customers really want in each item he sells. he demands quality in everything he sells. I feel the man should start a chain. Everyone I send to him is glad that I did.
