Been coming all of my life, now taking my own child.... I absolutely love Doumar's for it's delicious food, but also for all of the memories that come flooding back each and every time we pull into the parking lot, turn on our headlights, and roll down the window. The food is SIMPLE. If you want a cheeseburger, you get a cheeseburger. If you want fries, you get fries. The portions match the prices, and are more affordable than fast food chains. I have been enjoying the Doumar's experience for as long as I have been alive, and to this day I can say that I have never been inside the dining room. I definitely recommend eating in your car to get the full experience. I think a lot of newbie's come thinking that they will be served gourmet food-- don't be fooled. As mentioned, the food is SIMPLE. Come for the atmosphere!

Crummy food, lousy service, dirty!. This place is a dump - the tables and floor are filthy. Food is not worth it. They slam everything into greasy wrappers and you have to beg the server to bring you a tiny paper napkin. And the attitude from the servers is another thing. Not a first timer, so it was not a one time thing with this experience.

Low prices. Slow service. The headline explains it all.

Don't believe the hype.. Finally, some people see beyond all the ranting and raving. I frankly don't see why Doumar's is as popular as it is. The barbecue is completely bland. There is absolutely NO way they smoke the meat on premises; there is no smoke flavor, no bark--in fact, the meat tastes like it is purchased in bulk from a food service that knows nothing about proper barbecue. That aside, I've been here on three occasions; each time it was virtually impossible to get the attention of a very inattentive staff. I will NEVER go back here AGAIN.

they really know NOTHING about NC BBQ. NEVER again. Really shoud be less than one star. Because of all the hype, my husband and I sought this place out this past Friday. It was packed but I have no idea why!!!!! Being from North Carolina, I should have know better than order BBQ. Contrary to what the previous reviewer said, the BBQ here is a far from Eastern NC BBQ as the east is from the west. He must be referring to Lexington BBQ b/c it is absolutely nothing like what is served east of I-95. I have really given it some thought and can not find a truly fitting comparison. This stuff is worse than Old Hickory BBQ in a plastic container. It makes school lunch BBQ seem yummy!!! This stuff gives BBQ a BAD name!!! If you want decent BBQ wait until you can drive 3 hours south. My husband had a cheeseburger that had been cooked sometime that morning and looked like one served in a school cafeteria. The "special" ice cream and cones were disappointing as well. This place is a tourist trap. I can not phathom that they have any repeat business.

over rates. When we moved here all we heard was how great this place was. We went and we were disappointed, the second and third time- same thing. The food isn't bad, but it's not wonderful. It's reputation is great but the food isn't.

Best homemade ice cream!. My hubby stopped at this place due to a few of our friend's recommendations. We tried the pulled pork sandwhich, order of fries, and butter pecan ice cream cone. The sandwhich wasn't bad but we didnt get the extra condiments (bbq sauce, we didnt know you had to ask for) so it was just okay. The meat was very juicy and tender. The fries were typical fries. The ice cream was amazing! My husband had also got a triple thick strawberry shake. This shakes isnt a typical shake. So if you order it, be prepared to eat with a spoon.

The birthplace of the ice cream cone brings your meals on a tray while you sit in your car.. The Scene
Rich in history and tradition, this national landmark has been making waffle cones since 1934. Owner Abe Doumar created the first waffle cone in 1904 for the St. Louis Exposition. Curbside service is reminiscent of "Happy Days," although the waitstaff does not wear roller skates. Diners also have the option of bellying up to the soda counter or one of the tables inside.

The Food
People flock for the simple, delicious food. You can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches on the menu (from cheeseburgers to fried egg on toast). The North Carolina-style barbecue is legendary. Pork, seasoned to smoky and peppery perfection, sits high on a fresh bun, topped with slaw. Slather it with homemade hot sauce and it's a messy treat. Doumar's fresh waffle cones brimming with smooth, creamy chocolate or vanilla soft-serve are not to be missed.

Tradition. Doumar's has been a family tradition since the 70s. My mother went as a teenager when she was at Granby. In the 80s my mom and dad went there for dates. 90s and beyond were the child years for my sister and I. Now that I can drive and attend Granby, its like deja vu all over agina. I love Doumar's!!!!

Alway Has Been, Always Will Be the VERYS. After growing up with Doumar's (couldn't wait until my parents would take me there as a child and later driving myself in High School), I returned everytime I came back to visit the Norfolk area! I have taken my husband and all of my children there! Never will be any better ice cream and cones - never will be any better limeade! I have fond memories of the old cone making machine that has been in the front for years! Doumar's is the best excuse for: "There's no place like home!"
