Tips for Crab Shack

Crab Shack delicious!. Mmmmmmmm.......delicious! We had a great experience at the Crab Shack. The view was beautiful as we ate out on the deck. We had a very attentive waitress, and the other staff was friendly. We ordered an appetizer of a dozen oysters on the half shell, two mixed drinks, and two fresh yellow fin tuna dinners all for $56. The people next to us commented on the good food. It was an enjoyable evening, and I even bought a cute barmaid shirt. We will be back, and we will recommend Crab Shack to our friends.

Food with a View. We go to The Crab Shack several times per year simply because it looks west across the James River and is the most beautiful place to eat and watch a sunset in Newport News, maybe the Tidewater area. Service has always been good or better, and the bartender is more than competent. Sadly, the food is merely average. There are many locations in the area that do better. I have had the sampler as well as many other offerings and nothing has ever made me go, Wow!... except the view. On warm days, you can sit on the enclosed deck while listening to the river wash the rocks beneath the restaraunt. I will go back, but will always hope the cook has spent some time recording ideas from the food network.

Mothers Day Brunch. Management was rude and uncaring.

Took more than 20 min to change over a Keg.

Did not get refills on soft drinks.

Food was cold and incomplete.

Doesn’t know the difference between cheese cake and key lime pie.

great place for food and view. Located on the bank of the James River, The Crab Shack (not to be confused with the inferior Joes Crab Shack), is THE place to visit if you're in the mood for the best tasting seafood, at the most reasonable price's. Voted the best She Crab soup for several years in a row and the crab cakes cannot be beat; ANYWHERE! With virtually no filling in the crab cakes, they are sure to fill you up, but make sure you get one fried and one broiled. For all the salad lovers, make sure you try the freshly made tuna steak tuna salad. We aren't talking about canned anything here folks. This tuna salad is hard pressed to be beat. Fresh ingredients and an open atmosphere are sure to make a warm summer evening a very romantic outing, or a great family get together. If you are a Bar.rat, then you have to pull up a stool and have yourself a world famous Blue Crab Margarita. Keep em to 1 or 2 though, they tend to be on the strong side. The shrimp jammers and fried oyster's will satisfy your tummy until you can order one of their jumbo half pound Shack Burger's, topped with bacon and fresh lump crab meat. Make sure you get the out of this world fresh cut cole slaw as your side. After you have enjoyed your fantastic meal inside or outside on the covered deck, make sure you take a stroll down the mile long fishing pier located behind the restaurant. It is free for restaurant patrons to parooze, but for all of you die hard fisherman out there, cheap rates do apply. Let us not forget the avid boaters out there who like to spend the day on the water and bring the crew in for a hearty dinner. The Crab Shack has a pier sure to accommodate your vessel. Just pull on up, tie off and come enjoy some fine dining all while watching some of this areas most beautiful sunsets. I have been coming to The Shack now for over ten years and it has yet to let me down and the wait staff is easy on the eyes as well.

Poor Service and Blah Food. I have been to this place on several occassions and the one consistant thing I can say about it is, poor service and okay food. The atmosphere is what you are paying for and while it is beautiful, it is still overpriced. My last experience was with 3 other couples and 2 of them have never been there and will never go back. It's unfortunate b/c I really liked the location. We waited 25 minutes for drinks and when they finally came, my Frozen pina colada looked like warm milk, all the beer was flat and the order was not complete. It was not like it was that busy either since we were one of 3 tables being used on the patio. On to the course, the appetizers came out with the dinner and everything was cold. That took about 45 minutes. I wouldn't have minded so much about how much time it took, if we got the 2 nd set of drinks we ordered as well. Finally, we asked for the manager and I can honestly say I was not looking for any compensation but something. All she offered was another round of drinks, and not on the house and no apoologies. She made excuses. I have worked in many restaurants in my life and never have I ever had a manager that acted so unprofessional. Even getting the check took another 20 minutes. We could have walked ouit and they wouldn't have even known. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. I don't even want to give it any more attention than I already have.
